Hi @admin108
Welcome to the Auth0 Community!
This is a known issue affecting some users attempting to add payment methods to Auth0 Free tenants. The card decline is occurring in Auth0’s payment processing system (Stripe) before the transaction reaches your bank. This requires investigation by Auth0’s Billing Support team. You should contact Auth0 Support directly via Direct Message on the community forum or through your account, as this is a billing-specific issue that cannot be resolved through standard troubleshooting.
Root Cause:
The card decline is happening in one of these layers:
-
Stripe payment processor validation — Auth0 uses Stripe for payment processing. The decline may be occurring at Stripe’s validation layer before the transaction is sent to your bank.
-
3D Secure authentication — While your cards support 3D Secure, the Auth0 payment form may not be properly handling the 3D Secure flow, causing the transaction to fail before reaching your bank.
-
Content Security Policy (CSP) issue — Some users have reported CSP errors blocking Stripe’s payment UI components, preventing the payment form from functioning correctly.
-
Geographic or card-specific restrictions — Auth0 or Stripe may have restrictions on certain card types, issuing banks, or geographic regions.
-
Account verification issue — Your account may be flagged for additional verification, causing all card attempts to be declined.
Solution: Contact Auth0 Support
This issue requires direct investigation by Auth0’s Billing Support team. Follow these steps:
Step 1: Gather Information
Before contacting support, collect the following:
- Your Auth0 account email address
- Your tenant name
- The card details (last 4 digits, card type, issuing bank)
- The exact error message you received
- The date and time of each failed attempt
- Your geographic location / country
- Whether you have tried incognito mode or a different browser
- Browser console errors (if any)
Step 2: Contact Auth0 Support
Since you are on a Free plan, you may not have direct support access.
Direct Message on Community Forum (Recommended)
- Go to Auth0 Community Forum
- Send a Direct Message to
@support
- Include:
- Your Auth0 account email
- Your tenant name
- The information from Step 1
- The message: “I am unable to add a payment method to enable Custom Domain on my Free tenant. Multiple valid cards are being declined with the message ‘Your card was declined.’ Please investigate.”
Troubleshooting Steps (Before Contacting Support)
Try these steps to see if they resolve the issue:
Step 1: Clear Browser Cache and Cookies
- Clear all cookies and cached data for auth0.com
- Try adding the payment method again
- If that doesn’t work, proceed to Step 2
Step 2: Try a Different Browser
- Open a different browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge)
- Log in to your Auth0 account
- Try adding the payment method again
- If that doesn’t work, proceed to Step 3
Step 3: Try Incognito/Private Mode
- Open an incognito or private browsing window
- Log in to your Auth0 account
- Try adding the payment method again
- If that doesn’t work, proceed to Step 4
Step 4: Check Browser Console for Errors
- Open your browser’s Developer Tools (F12 or right-click → Inspect)
- Go to the Console tab
- Try adding the payment method
- Look for any error messages, especially related to Stripe or CSP
- Screenshot any errors and include them when contacting support
Step 5: Try a Different Card
You mentioned trying multiple cards, but if you haven’t already:
- Try a card from a different bank
- Try a card with a different card type (Visa, Mastercard, American Express). Please take into consideration that these are the only card types accepted by Auth0 when adding a payment method.
- Try a card from a different country (if you have access to one)
What NOT to Do
- Do not repeatedly attempt to add the same card — this may trigger fraud detection
- Do not share your full card details in public forums — only share the last 4 digits
- Do not assume the issue is with your card — multiple valid cards being declined indicates a system issue
Why This Matters
Custom Domains on Free tenants require credit card verification for fraud prevention. The card will not be charged, but the verification must complete before you can enable the custom domain. If you cannot add a payment method, you cannot use custom domains on your free tenant.
Expected Resolution Timeline
- Response time: Auth0 Support typically responds within 24-48 hours for billing issues
- Resolution time: Depends on the root cause, but usually resolved within 1-3 business days
- Escalation: If the issue is on Auth0’s side (Stripe integration, CSP, etc.), it may require escalation to the engineering team
Kind Regards,
Nik
