Overview
When trying to enroll in MultiFactor Authentication (MFA) with SMS using a tenant that is on the Free tier, the following error occurs:
SMS is currently unavailable. Try another method or contact support
This can also be seen when trying to enroll in MFA; the resulting operation will fail and return log events with the following error description:
Auth0 test provider cannot be used with a free subscription
This article explains the cause of the error and possible resolutions.
Applies To
- MultiFactor Authentication (MFA) SMS
- Free Trial
Cause
Auth0 no longer includes the Auth0 Phone Provider in free or trial subscriptions.
Solution
SMS MFA can be used when under the Trial period of an Auth0 Tenant. The Auth0 Phone Provider cannot be used due to the above error.
However Twilio or Custom provider can be configured (please see below screenshot of highlighted options for reference). This is true during the Trial period only.
Once the Trial period has ended, and the tenant enters a Free subscription level. The MFA feature will stop working with the error:
SMS is currently unavailable. Try another method or contact support
To further benefit from SMS MFA, review the Auth0 Pricing page to find a subscription level that supports SMS.
