Update Background Color of Universal Login

I’m trying to update the background color of a login. Using the Universal login page background color in the dashboard doesn’t work. It’s set to a specific color, but it’s not showing that color on the application.

When trying to update the template via the CLI, I get the following error: failed to update the template for the New Universal Login Experience: 402 Payment Required: A paid subscription is required for this feature.

I was on a paid subscription, then it lapsed. When I was on the paid subscription, I may have updated the templates via the CLI.

How do I edit the background color?

Hi @chris26,

You can update the background color from within Branding > Universal Login > Customization Options:

After saving and publishing you should be able to click the Try button and test your changes. Make sure there are no custom pages enabled in Branding > Universal Login > Advanced Options, they will activate the Classic Login and your changes will not be visible.

For the 402 Payment Required error see this post:

Thanks, Vlad. I added a payment method, and I’m still getting failed to update the template for the New Universal Login Experience: 402 Payment Required: A paid subscription is required for this feature..

I’ve already attempted to update the background color with Branding > Universal Login > Customization Options. I’ve clicked “Try” which shows the old page background.

I do not have custom pages enabled on the branding dashboard.

What else can I try?

Hello,
To edit the background color:

  1. Subscription Upgrade: Renew your paid subscription to regain access to template customization via CLI or Management API.
  2. No-Code Editor: Use the Universal Login no-code editor in the dashboard under Branding > Universal Login > Customization Options to adjust the background color.
  3. Custom Domain: Ensure a custom domain is configured, as it’s required for advanced customization.

Best Regards,
David Ball

I don’t want to renew our paid subscription. I just want to edit the background color. The Dashboard doesn’t allow me to do that.

Is there a bug where the template customization overrides the Dashboard editor and then doesn’t get reverted when an account transfers to a free account?

Hi @chris26,

I’ve checked your tenants. The development and staging tenants have a black background while the production one has a white background. If you are trying to change the background color of the production tenant, try opening it in the Auth0 Dashboard, change it and save.

Let me know if you are able to do so.

Have a good one,
Vlad
