I’m trying to figure out if there is way to display a user-friendly text for the connection button in Universal Login prompt instead of the domain defined for the connection, something similar to how social connection buttons are displayed.

Are you referring to customize the display name of the connection button?
If that is the case, if visit the connection, under Login Experience where you set up the domain for which the HRD will function, under it you have the option customize the button under Connection Button.
The text where SAML is displayed in the screenshot, you can change the display name of the connection inside Universal Login.
