Password managers not recognizing identifier field when “Identifier First” is enabled

Hi everyone,

I’m experiencing an issue with the “identifier First” feature in the authentication profile. When this option is enabled, no password managers, including the default Apple Passwords, recognize the identifier (email) field as a login form. As a result, they do not suggest saving or autofilling previously saved identifiers.

Is there a recommended approach to ensure that password managers recognize the identifier field when using the “Identifier First” flow? Are there specific attributes or configurations that should be applied to the form?

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Hi @dmitrybabichev,

Welcome to the Auth0 Community!

The Identifier First login flow was made to also work with password managers. It might depend on the settings of the browser you use. Try testing with other browsers and devices.

Have a good one,
Vlad

Hi Vlad,

Thanks for your reply!

I tested the “Identifier First” flow on different devices and browsers, but the issue persists.

Additionally, I noticed that on the mobile version of Safari, even when authenticating directly with the Auth0 service, the built-in Passwords manager does not suggest autofilling the identifier (email) field. The user has to enter the email manually. However, on the next step, when the password field appears, it works as expected and suggests the saved password for the site.

Is there a recommended way to ensure that the identifier field is recognized correctly by the built-in password manager in this scenario?

Thanks in advance for your help!

I have tested it myself twice to make sure it works. Try other services like Facebook or Twitter to see if the problem persists and if yes, check your password manager’s settings and make sure websites are not being blocked from saving or showing saved passwords.

Thanks for your follow-up!

I’ve confirmed that the issue occurs only when the “Identifier First” flow is enabled. I tested other services and password managers work as expected there.

To clarify, after entering the email (identifier) and proceeding to the next step, when the password field appears, all password managers on all tested devices and browsers correctly suggest the saved password. The problem is specifically with the identifier step, where no suggestions are provided.

It seems like the identifier field is not being recognized as part of a login flow until the password field is displayed. Are there any recommended adjustments or attributes to ensure password managers recognize the identifier field at the first step?

Thanks again for your assistance!

I understand what the problem is on your end. But as I stated before, every login flow works with password managers.

I have tested it again on the following browsers:

  • Google
  • Firefox
  • Safari

with the following password managers:

  • 1Password
  • Apple Keychain
  • Google Password Manager

on multiple devices.

Everything seems to be working accordingly.

There isn’t any adjustment that could make password managers not work. You can try testing the login on devices not owned by you like a friend’s phone or computer, but aside from this, I don’t know how to fix it on your devices specifically. You will need to make some changes in your password manager’s settings.

I have the same issue. The already saved passwords work okay. The password manager suggests using them. But when I am a new user that for the first time types email and password, password manager doesn’t suggest to save password, I just switched to this login option and am trying to solve the issue

Hi @elenab,

Welcome to the Auth0 Community.

What browsers, password managers and devices have you tested it on? Also check the settings in case you denied those websites from saving passwords.
