No duplicate username error

When using universal login box to signup, if you try to sign up with an existing username/email, it just gives you a generic “something went wrong error message”. Shouldn’t say something like “username/email taken, please use another one?”

Is there a configuration I’m missing to make this happen? It seems like such a basic thing.
