Our Free tenant continues to render a previously configured Universal Login page template. The normal hosted login widget and supported English/Simplified Chinese text settings work, but the old custom surrounding copy remains in English.
GET /api/v2/branding/templates/universal-login returns HTTP402 with “A paid subscription is required for this feature.” Authentication and other permitted Management API reads still work, so this is a feature limitation rather than a login failure.
What is the supported free way to remove the retained custom shell and return to the standard New Universal Login page? Can Auth0 staff perform that reset without a paid upgrade? We want to retain the existing custom domain, clients, connections, consent Forms/Actions and users, and do not want to switch to Classic Login or bypass plan restrictions.

Hi @yuanfangda666
Welcome to the Auth0 Community!
I understand that you are currently on a Free tenant where you have previously configured Universal Login page template, however now it is not rendering correctly and you cannot revert due to the " A paid subscription is required for this feature " error message.
This is a known limitation of Auth0’s plan structure: Universal Login page templates are a paid feature, and once you downgrade to Free, you lose access to manage them. The template cannot be deleted via the API or Console on a Free plan, and community members do not have backend access to delete it for you.
Recommended Solution
As this feature is reserved for paid subscriptions, in order to make any changes we recommend temporarily upgrading your tenant ( if applicable ). This can be achieved via the following steps:
- Navigate to Auth0 Dashboard → Account Settings → Subscription
- Upgrade to Essentials (or any paid plan)
- Navigate to Auth0 Dashboard → Branding → Universal Login
- Delete the template via the Management Console or API
- Downgrade back to Free plan
If this is not possible and you require further assistance with removing the template, please send a DM ( Direct Message ) to our @support group, forwarding all the information provided and confirming the email address of your Auth0 account and the name of the tenant where you are encountering this issue. You can click on " support" mentioned above and should have the option of sending a message to the group. The DM creates a private conversation where more sensitive details can safely be shared with us for troubleshooting.
Hope this information helped you determine the best course of action, please reach out to us for any other issues or requests, we will gladly look into it.
Have a great one!
