Why is an email address an invalid string in the User Name field on Signup?

Our application will require a legacy support through the database connection and require user name. This causes the user name to be required on new signups.

We’d like to tell our users who decide to signup to use their email address for both email address and user name for simplicity.

The user name field will not let you enter an email address?

Are there other options here?
