Universal Login - Custom Template Login Error not displaying

Hi,

I am building a custom view of the login page using the Universal Login customizable template. When I click on the Login button with clear errors (ex. email or password fields are empty), I get the pink field at the top, but no error message text. How can I get the same error text to show up, that would be displayed using Lock?
